R.M. Schindler designed the house for the Droste family of Belgian Chocolate fame in 1940. Schindler was one of Silver Lake’s most prolific architects of the Modernist Movement. He Immigrated from Vienna in 1914 at the age of 26, and after a three year stint in Chicago, he established himself with the firm of Frank Lloyd Wright where he supervised the construction of Hollyhock House. Wright was to become Schindler’s most important influence. No less than 41 of his works may be found in the Southern California landscape (Silver Lake may have the most with nine). The architect most closely associated with Schindler is of course, Richard Neutra. The two were classmates in Austria. Neutra followed Schindler to Los Angeles, with Schindler inviting the Neutras to set up residence in the Schindler House in West Hollywood. The pair collaborated successfullly at first. The harmony came to an end when Neutra was awarded the commission to design the Los Feliz home for Dr. Richard Lovell, Schindler’s most important client., The two split in 1931 and never reconciled until 1953, less than a year before Schindler’s death.
