Meet Mario Nugara, Founder & Artistic Director, The City of Angels Ballet, regarded as a teacher of unparalleled talent, Mario trained at Balanchine’s School of American Ballet and has danced with our nation’s finest companies, including the New York City Ballet, The Boston Ballet and The Fort Worth Ballet, with Rudolph Nureyev on Broadway and as Guest Artist for The American Ballet Company, The Eglevsky Ballet and The New Jersey Ballet.

Selected as a Fulbright Scholar in 1991, Mr. Nugara studied at the University of Copenhagen and The Royal Danish Ballet. During that time, he taught at the Royal Danish Ballet, Culberg Ballet, Ballet Academy of Stockholm, Sweden, and at the New Danish Dance Theatre, the Marie Brolin-Tani Dance Theatre, and Dansens Hus. He holds BFA and MFA degrees from New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

In 1993, Mario began offering no-cost ballet training to students in the Pico-Union District of Los Angeles. He recruited students reflecting the rich diversity of cultures which represent the City of the Angels. Nine years later, The City of Angels Ballet is a flourishing dance program, well-recognized for its artistic contribution to our community. As a disciple of George Ballanchine who taught that a ballet company should reflect the unique culture it resides in, Mr. Nugara has adopted this vision for The City of Angels Ballet. ‘We know that it is the social fabric of a city that contributes to a whole new expression of this art form, and we are committed to support these multi-cultural voices as they emerge’ stated Mr. Nugara.

The City of Angels Ballet has performed at the Japanese-American Cultural Center, the Los Angeles Convention Center, the California Waterfront Plaza, and the Long Beach Convention Center and with the USC School of Dance. They have appeared in several news features on all the major channels including CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood.

The City of Angels and the Community of Silver Lake, where The City of Angels Ballet is headquartered, is fortunate to have such a gifted dancer and teacher who gives back to the Community! Mario Nugara, we salute you!
