March 4, 2017 –
The Silver Lake Branch Library and Friends of Silver Lake Library (FoSLL) will have a book launch event on Saturday, March 4, 2017 for New Expressions in Origami Art: Masterworks from 25 Leading Paper Artists by Meher McArthur (Tuttle Publishing (Tokyo/Rutland,Vermont/Singapore). Since the 1950s, Children, hobbyists, mathematicians and fine artists worldwide have been avidly folding paper into interesting forms and figures, when trail-blazing Japanese artist Akira Yoshizawa popularized the art of origami. Since then, artists all over the world have been pushing the boundaries of paper folding in diverse directions. Using a variety of types of paper and other materials and employing techniques such as wet folding, curved creasing and tessellations, they are transforming origami into a bold, new sculptural art form that begins in two dimensions and ends in three. This origami art book features the work of 25 contemporary master folders who are among the most innovative origami artists working today. Asian art historian, author and educator (and Silver Lake resident) Meher McArthur shows how these artists are pushing the boundaries of origami vigorously in new directions in terms of style, scale, materials, subject and scope. The book will be available for purchase and signing by the author. All proceeds benefit the Friends of Silver Lake Library.
The Silver Lake Branch Library is located at 2411 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90039.
